How to Maintain Healthy Weight

There is nothing as frustrating as gaining weight after you worked so hard to lose it. It is a stab in the back, especially for those people who put so much time and effort to reach their goals but did not stick to a healthy lifestyle after attaining their desired weight. Once you have decided to take a big step and start living a healthy life, there is no turning back. Healthy habits should be part and parcel of your life.

Never skip your breakfast. Breakfast is the first meal of the day, and it gives you the energy you need to start the day. According to National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, people who do not skip their breakfast are less likely to snack during the day.

Eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly. "Slow but sure" should be your slogan. The faster you eat, the more likely you are to overeat. Your brain needs about twenty minutes to register that you have had enough, which is why you even need to take a break before going for seconds.

Be active. This is one of the best ways to help you maintain healthy weight. Choose exercises that you enjoy--for example, walking, jogging, cycling, and aerobics--and have fun. Avoid spending hours watching TV or playing computer games.

Pack your fridge with healthy foods. Vegetables and fruits are good low-fat snacks. In fact, about 2 cups of fruits and 2-3 cups of vegetables a day help you not only lose weight but also stay healthy (fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins and minerals).

Do not eat if you are not hungry. Find other ways of relieving your stress: you can meditate or do yoga, take a walk outside and have a breath of fresh air.

To lose weight, some people go by starving, some work overtime to increase the pressure added on to them, while some stop eating after 8pm, etc.

Do these methods work? Well, not really, and they could be harmful to your health and make you even fatter instead of slimmer.

Here are some good tips (myths vs truths) that you can learn from to avoid getting fatter and happily shed off fats yet maintaining your health.

1. Myth: Sleep less can help lose weight because staying up late can burn more fats?

Truth: Sleep more helps you lose weight instead. Studies and research have shown that by sleeping less, the fat cells in your body tend to produce about 18% less fat-burning hormones - leptin.

[Side note: Leptin is a substance that sends a signal to inform the brain that the body has had enough calories and does not need to consume any more food. Lack of this hormone will make the brain thinks that you need more food intake, which you may not really need it, thus resulting in you eating more than your body needs, and eventually leading to getting fatter.]

Imagine you sleep only for 4 hours, more likely you're going to take some snacks instead of doing workouts.

2. Myth: Milk makes you fat?

Truth: Milk contains essential nutrients that a body needs, such as proteins help build muscles and aid in organs functioning, and calcium helps to strengthen the bones.

You can choose to take low fat milk over full fat milk without compromising the nutritional values.

[Side note: Fat-free milk may not do you good since our body also need certain level of fats to stay in healthy condition.]

3. Myth: The pressure that you get in working long hours will help you lose more weight?

Truth: Most people tend to eat more (especially junk foods) when they feel stressed. Also, if you take your meals irregularly, not only you'll gain more weight but can easily suffer from indigestion. Beware!

4. Myth: You should stop eating after 8pm?

Truth: Our digestive system can't tell time, so what time you eat is not important and will not affect your body weight.

What more important is at which intervals of time you eat and what you eat.

[Side note: It's best to stop eating 2 hours before you turn in so as not to affect your sleeping quality.]

5. Myth: Taking low calories and low carbohydrate foods can lose weight?

Truth: Such diets are not being encouraged, as they are physically unhealthy and can lead to serious health problems.

Low calories diets, though may make you lose a few pounds for the first few days, is after all a diet that requires you to starve yourself, which our body highly rejects.

Low carbohydrate diets tend to rob too much energy off your body and make you feel awfully miserable everyday. It does help you lose some weight, but again, it can be detrimental to your health and strongly disapproved by doctors and dieticians.

The Truth About Low Calorie-Low Fat Diets

So many people believe that, to lose weight fast, all you have to do is hardly eat anything.

Dead simple. And, yes, you certainly will drop pounds if you skip breakfast, have soup and lettuce for lunch, and a bit of chicken with 3 carrots for dinner every night. The scales will show a dramatic drop, especially in the first week. And you'll probably feel dramatically awful!

Here are some of the side effects of drastically cutting calories:-

  • You'll think about food all the time
  • You'll feel weak and shaky
  • You'll be irritable and weepy -Your nerves will be on edge
  • You won't be sleeping very well
  • You may start catching colds and feeling ill But you soldier on.

You are determined to lose weight. And you console yourself, that once you get to your target weight, everything will be All Right - life will be wonderful and the sun will always shine; you'll be slim, full of energy and feel 10 years younger. Right? Wrong.

Low Calorie/Low Fat diets are harmful to your health. Your body is not designed to lose a lot of weight over a short period, and starving yourself - which is what it is - has some pretty awful consequences and ultimately, WILL NOT give you the results you so desperately crave. Just the opposite in fact. Look at it this way:-

  • You are programmed by Nature to eat enough to survive. Trying to override this fundamental programming is not wise. Mother Nature will not be mocked!
  • You feel shaky, nervy and weak because your blood glucose levels are too low - every single one of your body's functions, from figuring out a crossword clue to scratching your nose, needs fuel. Your body runs on glucose - and all food is broken down into glucose. Basically there's not enough fuel in your tank.
  • Your body needs around 1000 calories a day just to keep your brain and internal organs working. Take in fewer calories than that on a regular basis and - well, you do the math.
  • Out of a 3lb weekly weight loss, nearly half isn't fat. It's muscle and water. When you don't eat enough, your body starts to break down muscle tissue for fuel. Your body starts eating itself!
  • Because you are losing muscle, your metabolism slows down - and the slower the "motor" runs, the fewer calories you use to function. Conversely, the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn even when you're just sitting watching TV.
  • When you're not eating enough, your body becomes super-efficient at storing fat, because fat will keep you alive in the long run - your body doesn't realise that the low cal diet is self-inflicted. Your body thinks there is a famine!

As a result of all this, you may indeed reach your target weight. But you won't feel too good, and your body will be saggy as most of your muscle has gone - it is toned muscle that gives you a sleek shape. And the minute you go back - thankfully - to eating normally again, your fat storage system swings into overdrive and starts cramming every scrap of fat into stores in preparation for the next "Famine". Not only that, because you have much less muscle than before (your body ate it, remember), you use fewer calories to function - more go into fat storage than before. So not only do you put the weight back on a lot more easily than you lost it, but you put on more - and it's all Fat.

So there you have the facts. Drastic dieting has drastic results - and not the ones you wanted! The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat healthily, exercise regularly, cut down on processed, pre-prepared and junk food and accept that weight loss will be slow and steady. But you'll feel good.

What Is Your Perfect Weight?

Too often people think they should weigh less than they do, when in reality they're right at the weight they should be. Your body has probably changed over the years due to circumstances such as pregnancy. We normally gain a certain amount of weight as we get older.

With all of the advertisements on TV and in magazines, it's no wonder we are confused about what our ideal body shape should be. Maybe you saw what you believe should be your perfect body in a magazine and have dieted in vain to try to reach that shape.

If your quest for your perfect weight is constantly frustrating you, maybe it's time for a reality check. The weight you are trying to reach may be totally at odds with your body style and metabolism.

When you go on a strict diet trying to reach an unrealistic weight, you could be causing health problems for yourself in the future. Don't starve yourself trying to look like the model you saw in the magazine.

If you ask any thin woman what she would like to weigh, she'd probably say that she should lose 5 to 10 pounds. Most women tend to want to be thinner than they should be. Why is this true?

1. Advertising, including advertisements for weight loss products, feature very thin women instead of more normally sized women. The standards set by the fashion models used in these ads are impossibly high. These models have access to personal trainers, cosmetic surgery and have their photos airbrushed to reach that perfect look. If you use those standards for your perfect body, you are setting yourself up for failure.

2. Trying to reach a previous weight can be another unrealistic goal. Changing hormones and bone structures mean that the weight that you were in your early twenties may not be possible today. You may be able to stay on a strict diet and exercise regime for a short period of time, but not for the lifetime that it would take to keep your body at that weight.

3. Many of us see ourselves as fatter than we really are, so we are constantly trying to slim down to too-thin proportions. These people can never get thin enough. This can lead to eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia.

Trying for unrealistic weight loss goals can cause anxiety and stress as well as health problems, which cause even more stress. Reach for the goals that you can meet. Start with small changes in diet and exercise and then add more stringent methods only if you are truly overweight. As always, ask a doctor for his or her recommendations.

Don't Sacrifice...

The first rule as believed by those who are beginners in the field of fitness, is to leave the food you love the most. Well for most not so slim people, its food like processed cheese, pizza, chicken, beef etc. Its not easy to leave what you love. Yet its easier to balance the things you love along with what is nutritious. When a nutrition schedule is drawn for you, make sure you know what is in and what is out. If its meat and eggs all week long, its way too much fat! If its too much sparrow food, then its worse. Weight loss requires a smarter plan than that.

A person needs something way too desperately then he has to sacrifice the food he loves to eat. If he is strong willed then it is a piece of cake for him to let go of his cravings. Some can eat anything and everything they want and still look lean, while others are just not that lucky. Depending on your body structure and metabolism, you have to decide which meal and what exercise is essential for you.

Unfortunately for over weight people, no matter how much they try losing weight it seems like they are pushing the Himalayas. Scary but true! Its wise not to even mirror them. Its not worth a call! You set some standards for yourself. Give either a 100 percent or even lesser, but make sure whatever you do, you stick to your word, i.e. to lose as much weight as possible. Each week, is a new week and surely a brighter one.

You need regular fitness and not a body like Hitman, then its better to have an average percentage of what is known as compliance. Compliance in layman's term means fulfillment, observance, conformity etc. Compliance in fitness means what you should adhere to and what you should avoid.

There is a theory which was suggested by one of the fitness gurus. He said, "If you eat 5 small means a day, you eat about 35 meals a week. Around 32 meals are adhered to." This in turn means that you can have 3 or maximum 4 such parties or occasions which you can make merry in.

You can be in any one of the following scenarios, a) someone who wants to lose a few inches on the waistline and look decent, or b) someone who wants a perfect 36-24-36 kind of a figure. If its scenario A then having a compliance of 100% is sheer madness. On the other hand if you wish to be scenario B then you better slog night and day. Forget you ever loved mommy's cheese cake or thanksgivings turkey. You have to keep in mind that every time you sneak and have a small piece of cake from the fridge, you not only deceive yourself but lose the chances of losing calories.

On a more serious note, eat and eat to your heart's content. It could be a chocolate brownie or just an ice cream. Just remember to count the calories, but they hatch up to your muscles, thighs and tummy.

    5. Eat fish and chicken: fish and chicken is low on fat and can make an excellent weight loss diet. Avoid fat fishes. A good cheap weight loss fish is Tilapia. .

    6. Start drinking water: Soda and juice contains a lot of calories. Drink water and safe a lot calories. .

    7. Start taking walks: Walking one or two times a day isnt to hard but can help you lose weight faster. All other forms of physical activities are also good. .

    8. Eat often: eating many well planned low calorie meals a day helps you keep from snacking and make you feel less hungry. .

    9. Dont expect dream results: There are many diets that promises fast results but permanent weight loss takes hard work and dedication. .
