Healthy Ways to Lose Weight - Eat More Slowly!

In your quest to lose weight, it might surprise you to learn eating your food more slowly can have positive affect on your body weight.

It seems the longer you chew your food, the less you will need to eat to feel full. Here are a few simple ways you can break the bad habit of eating too quickly and subsequently eating too much:

  • Try to chewing your food longer before you swallow. Many of us forget the first step in the digestion process begins with chewing. Then all that extra time it takes you to chew will also make you feel more satisfied before you've woofed down way too much food.
  • Don't even put more food on your fork or spoon until you have finished chewing and swallowing the food you already have in your mouth. An easy way to accomplish this is to actually put your fork or spoon down until you swallow and are ready to pick up the bite.

Miss Etiquette would tell us we should have been doing this all along. It seems this is the mannerly way to eat anyway and it will help us break the habit of eating too fast.

The French seem to have this down pat. First they have smaller portions and they take a great deal more time in eating that smaller portion. This helps them stay slim and allows them to savor each bite, but it also takes longer which allows them to feel more satisfied with that smaller portion. Like the French once you begin to eat more slowly, you will find you enjoy your food more.

Scarfing down your dinner is a sure fire way to pack on the pounds. It takes about twenty minutes for your mind to get the message your body has had enough food. You can eat a lot of food in twenty minutes if you're eating fast.

And last but not least, you should never eat until you are full; rather eat until you feel comfortably satisfied. Then, you've had enough.
